DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove

The DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove is in Idaho just past the Montana/Idaho border. To get there leave Lolo Montana on Highway 12 heading west. Drive a little more than 32 miles to the Montana/Idaho Vistor center on Lolo Pass. Continue driving into Idaho for approximately 9 miles to the DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove. There is parking on both sides of Highway 12.

Daisy had never seen such big trees before and walked slowly, almost gingerly, down the path like she was in awe of these beautiful trees. These huge western red cedars can live for up to 3,000 years given the chance.

"Is this one tree or two?" Once Daisy got over her initial suspicions of the big trees she seemed to be drawn to the larger ones. Sitting among the cedars brings an inner peace that's hard to describe and I could tell even Daisy was affected.

This grove of cedars is dedicated to Bernard DeVoto who was a historian and conservationist. He is most known for editing the Lewis and Clark Journals right here in this grove.

The path is on both sides of highway 12 and is about a mile long. It doesn't take very long, only about 30 minutes to walk, but you'll want to take your time. There are benches along the trail so you can sit down and just enjoy the lush coolness the big trees provide. Be careful crossing Highway 12!

"Ha ha, hey Doug, this moss doesn't know which side of the tree is north!" On the east side of Highway 12 is the Trail of Discovery an interpretive trail that is wheelchair accessible. The trail leads you down to picnic tables along side of Crooked Fork Creek and you can learn a lot about these beautiful trees.

"You looking for me?" Until Next Time,
Doug
